There are 5 different types of Glofish in all, from tiny tetras that are good for small aquariums, to rainbow sharks that require 50 gallons each. So how big is Glofish? What size pool do you need?

I will answer all your questions and then some.

Seat belt!

How big is the Glofish?

Glofish can grow from 2 to 6 inches in length, depending on the species. Glofish tetras, danios, and fighting fish are small fish that only grow to 2 to 2.5 inches in length. Glofish barbs grow to be about 3 inches long and Glofish sharks can grow up to 6 inches!

How big are puffer tetras?

Globe tetras are bred by genetically modifying the beautiful black rock tetras. Thus, they grow to the same size as their original cousins, which is 2-3 inches.

How big is the Glofish Danios?

Glofish Danios were the first Glofish ever created. These fish grow to the size of their parent species, the zebrafish, at around 2 inches. Although these fish are small, they need a large tank due to their hyperactivity.

How big are Glofish bettas?

Glofish are like normal bettas, except for their bright disposition. Therefore, these fish grow to between 2.25 and 2.5 inches in length. They are extremely hardy fish, ideal for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

How long are glofish spines?

Puffer Barbs are the genetically engineered variants of the popular Tiger Barbs. In the aquarium, they can grow to about 3 inches in length. Although they don't grow very tall, their semi-aggressive nature means they need a lot of room to swim.

How big are balloon sharks?

Bullet sharks are genetically engineered rainbow sharks. So in captivity they grow to be about 6 inches long. Due to their size and rabid nature, these fish need large tanks.

Now that the main query is out of the way, let's answer some other important questions.

What is the recommended minimum tank size for Glofish?

puffer fish speciesMinimum tank size
Tetra Baiacu15 gallons
Glofish Danios10 gallons
Glofish Bettas5 gallons
puffer barbs20 gallons
Glofish-Haie50 gallons

What is the recommended minimum tank size for glofish tetras?

The recommended minimum tank size for glofish tetras is 15 gallons. These fish are small and can technically be kept in aquariums smaller than 15 gallons.

The problem, however, is that they are shoals and the ideal is to keep them in groups of 6 or more individuals. And a 15 gallon tank would be the absolute minimum for that.

Keeping them in a small tank will only add to the stress. As a result, they attack each other and even grab each other's fins. And that's not pretty to look at.

What is the recommended minimum tank size for Glofish Danios?

The recommended minimum tank size for Glofish is 10 gallons. However, these fish are very active and have been known to run through the tank like lightning.

As such, I would recommend purchasing a tank that is 20 gallons long or even larger.

Like neon tetras, glofish danios are schooling fish. You should keep at least 5-6 of them together to keep them comfortable.

(Video) The Glofish Galactic Purple Tetra: A Vibrant and Eye-Catching Fish (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi)

From what I've read on a forum, these fish prefer odd groups.

So 11-13 would be perfect in a 20 gallon tank.

What is the recommended minimum tank size for Glofish Bettas?

Opinions on the ideal tank size for fighting fish are divided. Some say 2.5 gallons would be enough, while others claim they need at least 5 gallons each to live happily.

I agree with the second school of thought here. A Betta should be given at least 5 gallons each for him to lead a comfortable life.

Also, adding more than one male in small tanks without adequate space and hiding places is a very bad idea. You will literally fight to the death.

So if you plan on keeping small aquariums I would suggest keeping females only. Give up those majestic fins.

What is the recommended minimum tank size for Glofish Barbs?

Don't go by the size of a puffer splinter. They have a lot of pep for fish that rarely grow larger than 3 inches. So the recommended minimum tank size for these fish is 20 gallons.

However, many experienced aquarists recommend keeping them in a tank that has a capacity of at least 30 gallons. There are multiple reasons for this.

Firstly, glofish barbels are very active swimmers that need a lot of open space for swimming. Second, at the end of the day, these fish are tiger barbs. Therefore, they become aggressive and resort to violence when there is not enough territory.

And finally, tiger barbs are educating fish. They must be kept in a group of at least 5-6. And as you can imagine, a 5 or 10 gallon tank just can't hold that many spikes.

What is the recommended minimum tank size for Glofish sharks?

Glofish sharks are just as active and aggressive as their "all-natural" cousins. So the minimum recommended tank size to keep just one Glofish Shark is 50 gallons. Yes, you read that right!

(Video) Glofish Care Guide - Aquarium Co-Op

And if you plan on keeping more than one of these fish, be prepared for a 125-gallon or larger tank.

In small aquariums, these active fish are quickly stressed and become quite aggressive.

Now let's see what is the average lifespan of these fish.

How long does Glofish live?

Here is a table showing the average lifespan of different Glofish species:

specieshope of life
Tetra Baiacu3-5 years
Glofish Danios4-5 years

Glofish Danios65°-77°F
Glofish Bettas78°-80°F

Are Glofish difficult to keep alive?

No, Glofish are not difficult to keep alive because the scientists who bred them deliberately chose the hardiest, beginner-friendly species like bettas and barbs to create the Glofish.

As long as you provide a clean, stress-free environment and feed them healthy foods at the correct interval, your Glofish will live as long as their unmodified cousins.

That said, Glofish can sometimes die on arrival due to post-purchase travel stress and fatigue. Therefore, always look at the fish before buying it.

Choose puffers that are active and good swimmers, have a round belly, and show no signs of abnormalities such as white spots, broken fins, or odd swimming patterns.

Final words: How big is the Glofish?

There are five different species of Glofish. While some only grow 2 inches long, others grow up to 6 inches long and require 50 gallons each.

Glofish danios, bettas and tetras are the smallest species - they only grow to about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. Glofish barbs are slightly larger, growing to about 3 inches in length. Finally, Glofish sharks are the largest of them all, reaching up to 6 inches in length!
