They don't use downline or any other crap, it's just the company and the sellers. The best way to think of it is that they use proxies under the guise of a "job" to sell them to the social circle of proxies: their parents and maybe their friends' parents.

If three Cutco salesmen knocked on their parents' door and tried to sell them a set of knives, it would be a massive waste of everyone's time, so they recruit kids to sell to their parents. They accept children in groups of 25 or more. this multiplies the recruiters' time. The children's parents buy the game for them as a demo game so they can sell it. The recruiters then have the children try to sell them to their family friends. and usually have little success. So the kids basically wash themselves. If a kid miraculously turns out to be a super charming and effective salesman, great, they can do that whenever they can, but that's a bonus, not part of the plan."

“I used to work at Vector (a company that sells and markets Cutco). And while I no longer work with them, I've never found them to be a "ponzi scheme." It certainly could have been a few years ago, but now you can get the kits for free instead of paying for them and you can't go door to door anymore.
